Short rant, updated: Why buy my kit and not one of the other ones available on eBay? Very simple – I’m the only regular seller here on eBay that specializes in Tandberg audio equipment, as a collector myself and also an experienced Tandberg DIY tech. As anyone who’s met me knows, I have a passion for Tandberg, maybe obsession is a better description. Before I got deep into collecting and servicing 3000-series components like these tuners, the only replacement switches anyone was selling for these tuners were either used originals on the verge of failure, or poorly hacked up very common, cheap tact switches that were completely wrong for this application. They were wobbly when installed and looked nothing like the originals and didn’t even fit the PCB pad layout properly. Now we have another seller who has made a PCB to adapt these same cheap switches, which LOOKS like an elegant solution but has the same issues I found when I researched this issue originally: the long plunger shafts aren’t as stable, and they’re very dependent on the alignment to the metal buttons which results in less than ideal “tactile” feel when you use them. They also have a noticeably shorter “throw” than the originals. So, I spent some quality time years back researching and tracking down a modern, still in production switch that was much closer in fit and feel to the original Tandberg part. Tried some others but rejected them as being less suitable either because the throw was too long or too short, or they didn’t fit well physically, or felt a bit wobbly in use. I then set up a jig to modify that one switch so it fits perfectly in these classic tuners. I also did the same research to track down the correct memory battery & dial lamps, available in one of my other listings.
Also, please note that my kits do come with very detailed instructions (see the pic for an example) not just for installing the parts, but including experienced tips for solving other issues commonly found in this series of tuners. They’re based on the knowledge picked up in restoring dozens of 3000-series tuners and other components over the past several years, by a tech that specializes in Tandberg audio equipment. That’s part of the difference you get buying parts from a subject matter expert, vs. someone that has worked on only one or two of these complicated tuners.
Please note I do not provide ANY technical support for owners or other techs that subsidize these other sellers that only want the revenue for part sales here on eBay without doing the legwork or providing assistance to other Tandberg owners (unless you pay them of course!), nor will I supply other original parts to that group.
This listing is for a set of 8 new preset switches for 3000-series Tandberg analog tuners. You will receive 8 switches that have been modified to fit your tuner perfectly, NOT the entire preset switch PCB as seen in the pictures. You also receive (via emailed pdf) two detailed instruction sheets covering installation of the switches and general repair tips for these tuners. This repair is not recommended unless you have good soldering & bench skills. By the way, I do not supply solder with this kit for a very good reason – it takes a LOT more than a couple of inches of solder to go through one of these tuners and fix all of the bad joints. Anyone competent to do this repair should already have a roll on hand anyway!
Tandberg earned a reputation for
building rock-solid, super high-performance stereo receivers & other
components in the late 1970’s. These fine audio components were hand-assembled
in
Norway
, and among other things their tuners
had sensitivity and noise rejection capabilities equal to some of the finest
component tuners made. They had a beautiful sonic quality and were built to
last a lifetime.
However, Tandberg ran into financial
distress by the end of the decade and was reorganized as a much smaller
company. The old wood cabinet products were sold out completely to finance the
new operation, which then launched the 3000 series. Among those more modern,
brushed-anodized aluminum models, the 3001 and 3011 were standouts with the
3001 in particular ranking among the finest component tuners ever produced even
today.
There are a couple of well-known
design flaws with these tuners however. One is that the preset switches
collapse internally over time, and have to be replaced or removed in order for
the tuner to be operable, even with the manual tuning knob. The problem is that these were custom-made switches even when they were still in production, and nowadays no manufacturer makes a switch anywhere close to the same dimensions.
I can now offer new
replacement parts for these troublesome original switches. I have located a
replacement switch that solders in place of the originals with no modification of
the circuit board required. These new switches should last for years, and fit virtually the same as the originals.
This
listing is for eight (8) preset switches, enough to replace all of the switches in one of these tuners. The switches have been custom-modified to match the installed height and pin spacing of the originals. The new switches will fit any of the 3001/ 3001A and 3011/3011A tuner models. You can see how neatly these switches install in the pictures.
Note:
This listing is just for the 8 new switches,
not
an entire preset board. I included the pictures of the boards to show
how well these switches fit after they are installed on your board.
Please see my other listings for
replacement dial lamps and preset memory batteries for these marvelous Tandberg
tuners, and full upgrade service for new switches, battery & lamps all at
the same time.
Note:
If you are not comfortable installing the parts yourself, I may be able to refer you to a qualified tech for turn-key service on your tuner including parts replacement and alignment. Please contact me through this listing to confirm whether that option is available.
Buyers, please note my shipping
practices as follows:
This auction is set up to reflect
free domestic shipping
, with
no
handling charges.
I make every effort to find and use
the lowest cost shipping method appropriate for your item, and refund
surplus shipping paid whenever possible.
Please remember that selecting the
lowest
cost shipping
method also
results in the slowest delivery
– please do not leave low detailed seller ratings because of this fact! If
you need the item faster, Priority Mail is a better choice.
Please contact me if the shipping
method you want is not offered in the listing. If that service is
available for the particular item, I will revise & resend the invoice.
I am not a full-time eBay merchant,
but an experienced vintage audio enthusiast. I put many hours into
supporting my customers and listings on eBay but am fitting all of that
around a very heavy full-time work schedule. However, I always do my best
to ship within the guidelines posted in my listings.
In the case of larger items shipped
overseas, USPS Priority is currently the lowest cost service available.
DHL & UPS are much, much higher. I will use First Class Mail
International where possible but it has a weight cut-off of 4 lbs.
I use recycled packaging materials
when I can, because I believe it is the environmentally sound thing to do.
I also use new USPS Priority &
other packaging materials to supplement the recycled materials where
appropriate.
I’m always very careful to make sure
the item being shipped is properly protected regardless of the type of
packing materials used.
Please note that 4 star ratings while
seemingly above average do not qualify me as an excellent seller by eBay’s
standards. If you feel that you can’t leave 5 star ratings in any of the
four categories, please contact me to resolve whatever issue has caused
you to feel that way. I am committed to meeting the highest customer
service standards.
Please keep
the above in mind when you leave feedback.
If you feel you cannot leave 5
star Detailed Seller Ratings, please contact me
so I can resolve
whatever issue you may have. Thank you for viewing my listing!
